Member of Parliament Lutfur Rahman Kazal has directed authorities to intensify drain cleaning efforts to keep Cox’s Bazar town free from waterlogging ahead of the upcoming monsoon season.

He issued the instructions on Friday at around 11:00 am while inspecting ongoing cleanliness activities in the Buddhist Temple Road area under Ward No. 8 of the town.

During the visit, the lawmaker spoke with workers and reviewed the progress of the work. He said that regular cleanliness drives are essential to maintaining the town’s aesthetic appeal and ensuring a healthy environment. He stressed that keeping drains and sewers clean is crucial to reducing mosquito breeding. He warned that stagnant, dirty water can lead to the spread of diseases such as dengue, malaria, and chikungunya.

Cox’s Bazar Municipality Chief Executive Officer Adnan Chowdhury, sanitation inspector Kabir Hossain, and other supervisors were present during the inspection.

Municipal sources said that the Taraboniachhara area, being a hilly zone, has seen significant silt accumulation, filling much of the canal. Indiscriminate waste dumping and unplanned construction have further obstructed water flow.

To address the issue, emergency canal excavation work will begin on Friday, with an excavator and two trucks operated by the municipality, until a contractor is appointed under a government canal re-excavation project announced by the prime minister.

Earlier, on March 14, MP Kazal inaugurated a major drain cleaning programme at the Taraboniachhara point in Ward No. 7. He said such initiatives would continue to help build a clean and aesthetically appealing tourist city.
