What began as a hobby in the Marine Drive area of Cox’s Bazar has become a steady source of income from pigeon farming. A young entrepreneur, Captain Sohel, has built a small but profitable pigeon farm with his initiative and dedication.
Captain Sohel said he started the venture a few years ago with just five pairs of pigeons out of personal interest. Gradually, the hobby turned into an income-generating activity. So far, he has sold around 200 pairs of pigeons, earning a significant amount of money.
“I initially raised pigeons out of interest, but later realised that local breeds have good demand in the market. That is when I started taking it more seriously,” he said.
Despite a busy routine, he regularly makes time to take care of the pigeons. He has also received different breeds of pigeons as gifts from relatives, which have enriched his farm.
Sohel has been interested in raising animals and birds since childhood. Although he once went abroad in search of a livelihood, he did not abandon his passion. After returning home, he resumed rearing ducks, chickens, and pigeons.
He has been living in Cox’s Bazar for nearly a decade and is involved in parasailing, speedboat, and jet ski services. Alongside his profession, he established the farm near his workplace.
Regarding future plans, he said he aims to expand the farm by introducing improved and foreign pigeon breeds. He also plans to increase duck and poultry farming to create additional income opportunities.
Locals believe that Captain Sohel’s initiative can serve as an inspiration for young people, demonstrating that with limited capital and strong interest, a hobby can become a source of income.
