Schools of small fish swimming in the shallow waters at Darya Nagar Sea Beach in Cox’s Bazar fascinated tourists and locals alike.

The fish were observed moving rapidly over the sandy seabed under clear water, attracting crowds of onlookers along the shoreline.

Local fishermen identified the species as bele fish, commonly found in shallow sandy coastal areas. They explained that these fish often blend with the sandy seabed due to their body colour and patterns, making them less visible to predators.

On Monday morning, groups of fish were observed moving across various points of the beach. At times, they remained still on the sand before darting away, creating ripples that drew visitors’ attention.

Fisherman Abdul Karim said such fish typically move in schools for protection and foraging. They are more commonly seen near the shore under calm sea conditions, during tidal changes, and in clear water.

Environmental experts said the presence of such species indicates a healthy coastal ecosystem. These small fish also play an important role in the marine food chain as a food source for larger sea creatures.

The unusual sight has added an extra attraction for tourists visiting the beach, further enhancing the natural appeal of Cox’s Bazar’s coastline.
