A new administrative unit, Matamuhuri, has been formed as the tenth upazila of Cox’s Bazar, following long-standing public demand.

The decision was approved on Thursday during the 120th meeting of the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganization (NICAR), chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

During the meeting, a proposal to divide Chakaria and form a new upazila named Matamuhuri was discussed and approved.

Most of the seven unions included in the proposed upazila are located in remote coastal areas where communication systems remain poor and large areas become waterlogged during the monsoon season. Officials believe the formation of the new upazila will make administrative services more accessible and improve education, healthcare, and law and order in the region.

The new Matamuhuri upazila will consist of the unions of Saharbil, Bheola Manikchar, East Bara Bheola, West Bara Bheola, Konakhali, Dhemushia, and Badarkhali. The area is home to nearly 300,000 people.

The upazila has been named after the 287-kilometer-long Matamuhuri River, which flows through the region.

Alongside the formation of the new upazila, preparations are also underway to create three additional unions under the remaining administrative structure of Chakaria upazila.

The proposed unions include North Harbang from Harbang, Paharchanda from Baraitali, and Malumghat from Dulahazara.
