Ukhiya witnessed its first-ever Global Climate Strike on Friday, a distinctive youth-led initiative held under the theme: “A strong call for climate awareness from the voices of young people.” The event, organised at the Shaheed Minar premises, turned into a vibrant gathering of young activists, filled with pledges for environmental protection and a range of awareness-building activities.
The programme was implemented by the Youth Organisation for Social Development (YOSD), bringing together various climate-focused social, humanitarian, youth development and voluntary organisations from across Ukhyia.
Organisers said the initiative was not merely a protest, but a platform to strengthen collective youth voices, promote climate awareness, and encourage knowledge sharing on environmental issues.
Throughout the day, participants highlighted real-life experiences of communities affected by climate change.
They emphasised that environmental degradation is no longer an abstract global concern but a harsh daily reality for people living in coastal and vulnerable regions.
The event featured poster art competitions, climate-themed quizzes, open discussions and a cleanliness drive.
Through creative artwork, participants expressed strong messages on environmental protection.
The quiz segment helped enhance youth knowledge on climate change, health, environment and sustainable development.
Participants also discussed pressing local issues, including deforestation, plastic pollution, flooding, and rising temperatures, sharing their perspectives on the growing environmental crisis. The day concluded with a cleanliness campaign in which volunteers cleaned the Shaheed Minar area and its surroundings.
Expressing solidarity with the global Climate Strike movement, organisers noted that this was the first such initiative in Ukhiya, generating significant enthusiasm among young participants.
They believe such efforts will play a crucial role in building local awareness on climate action.
YOSD Founder and Chief Executive Officer Kafil Uddin said, “The worst impacts of climate change are being borne by young people and marginalised communities. Therefore, it is urgent to build awareness and take collective action. Positive change is possible through youth leadership.”
Mahabub Kawsar, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Hasi Mukh Youth and Social Development Foundation, added, “Small initiatives can lead to significant transformations. Everyone must play a responsible role in protecting the environment from their respective positions.”
Speakers at the event called for greater youth engagement in tackling climate change at local, national, and international levels. They stressed that awareness and collective participation are key to ensuring a safe, green, and sustainable future.
Held at Ukhiya Shaheed Minar, the event has already fostered renewed environmental consciousness and enthusiasm among the youth, participants said.
