Drugs are linked to various crimes committed in Cox’s Bazar as well as elsewhere in the country, said Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs and minister in charge of Cox’s Bazar, Saching Prue Jerry.
“Drugs are not only a problem for Cox’s Bazar; they are an important issue for the entire country. The government is working to curb drug abuse,” he said.
The minister made the remarks while speaking as chief guest at a special meeting organised by the Cox’s Bazar district administration at the conference room of the deputy commissioner’s office on Thursday.
The meeting discussed law and order, drug and corruption control, good governance, transparency and accountability, and coordination and monitoring of government activities related to public welfare and development.
Saching Prue Jerry said coordinated efforts and sincere cooperation among all concerned were essential to maintaining a normal, peaceful and stable law-and-order situation in Cox’s Bazar.
He said closer cooperation among the administration, law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders could further strengthen peace, order and public security in the district.
Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner Md A Mannan chaired the meeting. Member of Parliament Lutfur Rahman Kajal, reserved women’s seat MP Advocate Shamima Ara Swapna, Police Superintendent ANM Sajedur Rahman and senior officials of different law enforcement and government agencies also spoke at the meeting.
Representatives of government departments, law enforcement agencies, local representatives and members of the relevant committees were present.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, the minister said drug prevention committees would be formed in neighborhoods across Cox’s Bazar.
He also said steps would be taken to address workforce and vehicle shortages in different law enforcement agencies.
“Drug control cannot depend solely on law enforcement agencies. The collective support of people from all sections of society is necessary,” he said.
