Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered around 200,000 yaba tablets from a fish crate during an operation along the Naf River border in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, on Monday.
The drugs were recovered after a suspected smuggler allegedly entered Bangladesh disguised as a fisherman and fled after being challenged by BGB personnel.
A special patrol team of Unchiprang Border Outpost under Ukhiya Battalion (64 BGB) conducted the operation in the border area on Monday morning.
Lt Col Md Zahirul Islam, commanding officer of Ukhiya Battalion (64 BGB), confirmed the matter.
He said the patrol team noticed suspicious movement in the border area in the morning. At one point, a person allegedly entered Bangladesh from Myanmar carrying a fish crate on his head while posing as a fisherman.
When BGB personnel challenged him, he dropped the crate and fled, the officer said.
The patrol team later searched the crate and recovered around 200,000 yaba tablets concealed in khaki-coloured packets using a special method.
Legal proceedings have been initiated over the seizure, the BGB officer said.
He added that intelligence surveillance had been strengthened to identify the drug suppliers and others involved in the smuggling network.
BGB operations against drug trafficking and smuggling along the border would continue, he said.
