Severe Cyclone Arnab over the Bay of Bengal has prompted the Bangladesh Meteorological Department to raise the local warning signal to No. 3 at the Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra seaports.

The cyclone was moving west-northwest and intensifying, according to a special bulletin the meteorological department issued on Tuesday, October 27.

At 3:00am on Tuesday, the storm was located approximately 990 kilometers southwest of Chattogram port, 945 kilometers southwest of Cox’s Bazar port, 865 kilometers south of Mongla port and 865 kilometers south of Payra port.

Maximum sustained winds near the cyclone’s center were around 118 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching up to 150 kilometers per hour. The sea was very rough near the center of the storm.

The meteorological department said the cyclone could move further west-northwestwards and cross the Indian coast on October 28.

Authorities have advised people concerned to remain alert, monitor weather updates and follow subsequent instructions.

Mohammad Abdul Hannan, assistant meteorologist at the Cox’s Bazar Meteorological Office, said fishing boats and trawlers in deep waters should remain in safe shelter until further notice. Vessels already at sea have been advised to stay close to the coast and navigate cautiously.

He warned that the sea could remain rough under the cyclone’s influence and urged fishermen to monitor weather conditions closely.
