The government has taken an initiative to set up a 70-megawatt grid-connected solar power plant on unused land in Matarbari, Maheshkhali upazila, Cox’s Bazar, with the project targeted for completion by 2028.
The development project proposal (DPP) has already been sent to the Planning Commission for consideration.
Mohammad Nazmul Haque, managing director of Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited, disclosed the information to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).
According to the draft DPP prepared for a meeting of the Planning Commission’s Project Evaluation Committee, the project is scheduled for completion by December 31, 2028. Its proposed cost is Tk 604.97 crore.
Officials said the solar power plant would increase renewable electricity supply to the national grid while helping reduce dependence on fossil fuels and carbon emissions.
The initiative is also expected to support the country’s long-term energy security and the development of a more sustainable power system. It would also put unused land in Matarbari to productive use, potentially turning the area into a new centre for renewable energy generation.
Matarbari is already one of the country’s major energy and power infrastructure development areas. The proposed solar project would add a renewable energy component to the area’s existing fossil-fuel-based infrastructure.
