Cox’s Bazar witnessed 501 mm, the record-breaking rainfall in recent history. The heaviest downpour along with massive hill runoff, has severely damaged Kolatoli and Sugandha beaches.

Without an adequate drainage system, rainwater has rushed right onto the seashore, carving up channels and destroying the terrain. This has also faded the natural beauty of the beach and made it difficult for both tourists and locals to get about.

On Sunday morning (September 15), during a visit to Kolatoli and Sugandha points, the range of the destruction was revealed.

Locals and business owners, however, mentioned that the beach had already been damaged by previous rains and this time the hill runoff has worsened the situation.

Some business owners have repaired parts of the Kolatoli road, allowing tourists to move around, though with some risk.

Mahabub Alam, a supervisor of the beach workers under the Cox’s Bazar district administration, told Cox’s Bazar Life that the hill runoff has caused damage to the Kolatoli and Sugandha points of the beach.

“The district administration’s tourism magistrate has inspected the areas. He has visited both sites, and they will take immediate action,” he added.
