Samsul Islam Shopon’s ‘Latika’ will be exhibited at the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, in November.

The British Council-funded documentary Latika has already been screened at nine international film festivals. According to a report by the Dhaka Tribune, the audience at the Dokubaku International Documentary Film Festival praised it.

The Ministry of Culture of Azerbaijan has nominated ‘Latika’ for the ‘Climate Change Awards’ along with two other films: Russia’s ‘Against the Wind’ and Belgium’s ‘On Melting Snow’.

The story of ‘Latika’ revolves around a struggling woman and her family from the traditional Malo community on the banks of the Chitra River in the Narail district of Bangladesh. Her husband, Shyam Biswas, is a fisherman. A moving picture of their strained family with their two children and three pairs of otters emerges.

In addition to making films, filmmaker Shopon has been working on Bangladesh’s extinct animals, communities climate and environment for four years from a place of social responsibility. His charity development organization is called Khiyo. He said he and his organization’s director, Debashish Bain, will participate in the (COP29) conference.
