In a move to preserve the fragile environment and biodiversity of St. Martin’s Island, the government has decided to limit the number of tourists visiting the island.
Restrictions will be in place during the peak travel months of November, December, January, and February.
The island will allow a maximum of 2,000 tourists to visit each day in December and January.
However, in November, while visitors can access the island, no overnight stays will be allowed. The island will undergo a comprehensive clean-up in February, during which no tourists can visit.
Apurba Jahangir, Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Advisor of the interim government, made the announcement during a session at the Service Academy.
He explained that the restrictions are essential to maintain the environmental balance of the coral island.
“St. Martin’s Island is a coral island with unique ecological diversity. To protect this environment from degradation, the government has decided to restrict tourism during these months. Without such measures, the island could face severe environmental consequences,” Jahangir stated.
Moreover, he announced a complete ban on plastic use on the island as part of the government’s efforts to ensure sustainability. February’s clean-up initiative aims to restore the island’s natural beauty and maintain its ecological health.
