The 33rd International and 26th National Disability Day was observed in Cox’s Bazar with engaging events, including a rally, art exhibition, pitha festival, distribution of tricycles and wheelchairs, prize-giving ceremonies, discussions, and cultural performances.
The District Administration and Department of Social Services organized the day-long programs on Tuesday under the theme “Building an Inclusive and Sustainable Future: Advancing with Empowered Leadership of Persons with Disabilities.”
The celebration began with a vibrant rally from the Laboni Point Beach Carnival area. It went through the Hotel-Motel Zone and concluded at the Arunoday Specialized School. Following the rally, a discussion session was held in the school’s conference room, with Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Salah Uddin as the chief guest.
In his address, the Deputy Commissioner highlighted the importance of overcoming disabilities as a pathway to success. He emphasized that persons with disabilities drive transformative societal changes through their abilities. He also noted that the government is implementing multifaceted initiatives under social safety nets to support underprivileged groups, including the disabled, orphans, and impoverished individuals.
As part of the day’s events, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) distributed ten wheelchairs, and the Disability Service and Assistance Center handed out five tricycles to individuals with special needs.
The festivities continued with an award ceremony for a children’s art competition, an exhibition of handmade crafts, a pitha festival showcasing traditional delicacies, and captivating cultural performances by students with special needs.
