Bangladesh actively pursues membership in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to strengthen its partnerships with Southeast Asian countries. As part of this initiative, the Chief Adviser, Muhammad Yunus, recently met with the prime ministers of Malaysia and Thailand on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam revealed this during a press briefing at Hare Road in the capital.

Historically, the Bay of Bengal has been a vital trade and cultural link between South and Southeast Asia. Through the Naf River, the Myanmar border acts as a bridge connecting SAARC and ASEAN. While SAARC has struggled to achieve its objectives due to a lack of cooperation among member states, ASEAN membership could represent a pivotal step in Bangladesh’s geopolitical strategy centered on the Bay of Bengal.

The Cox’s Bazar Community Alliance believes that Bangladesh can significantly enhance its regional geopolitical and economic influence with robust foreign policy and strategic planning. Joining ASEAN would boost trade and investment and open access to new markets, propelling the country toward greater financial prosperity.

Pursuing ASEAN membership is more than just a strategic move; it is also an opportunity to forge new international partnerships. The Cox’s Bazar Community Alliance views this initiative as a unique chance for Bangladesh to achieve significant Bay of Bengal-centered geopolitical success and strengthen its presence on the global stage.
