The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has agreed to share its Rohingya database with the Election Commission of Bangladesh. According to Humayun Kabir, Director General of the National Identity Registration Wing, the decision follows an agreement between the government and the UN agency.
Following a discussion with UNHCR on Wednesday (March 19) afternoon, Kabir stated that the refugee agency has registered over one million Rohingyas in Bangladesh. With the ongoing voter list update ahead of the upcoming elections, timely access to this database will help authorities identify and prevent Rohingya individuals from being mistakenly included in the electoral roll.
He further explained that any Rohingya found on the voter list based on UNHCR’s data will be removed. To facilitate this process, a technical team comprising representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Election Commission, and UNHCR has been formed.
