The demand for bananas has surged during Ramadan in Cox’s Bazar, leading to a price hike at both wholesale and retail levels. In different alleys and markets of Cox’s Bazar town, bananas are sold for Tk70 to Tk80 per dozen.

Despite high banana production in the hilly regions of Cox’s Bazar, prices have not decreased. As a result, both traders and local buyers are forced to pay more, even in production areas.

One of the main reasons for the demand is that bananas grown in the hilly areas are free from formalin, making them popular across the country. Among the varieties, the local “Bangla Kola” is sweeter and more flavorful than the widely available “Chini Champa” variety, further increasing its demand.

Many families living in the hills of Cox’s Bazar cultivate bananas. While production continues year-round, the special demand during Ramadan has led to a rise in prices.
