Jatka Conservation Week 2025 is being observed across Bangladesh, including Cox’s Bazar, from April 8 to April 14. This year’s theme is: “Protect Jatka, Fill the Nets with Hilsa.”
Speaking at a press conference on Monday at the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter emphasized the importance of jatka conservation.
“If we can protect jatka, hilsa production will increase significantly. A higher yield means better market supply, which will help stabilize prices and keep hilsa affordable for consumers,” said Akhter.
To ensure hilsa remains within the purchasing power of the general public, the interim government has implemented an effective action plan, she added.
Jatka refers to juvenile hilsa measuring less than 10 inches (25 cm) in length. A fully grown hilsa weighs around 1 kg and reaches 40-50 cm, while those exceeding 2 kg can grow up to 60-62 cm. Through Jatka Conservation Week, efforts are being made to allow these juveniles to mature into full-sized hilsa, ensuring a sustainable and prosperous fishing industry.
