To enhance the tourist appeal of the only mountain-surrounded island in the country, Moheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar, a breathtaking betel leaf-shaped sculpture has been unveiled. Located at the Jetighat Circular Square in the upazila, this masterpiece has already caught the attention of both local and international visitors.
The sculpture beautifully showcases Moheshkhali’s rich cultural and natural diversity, incorporating iconic elements such as the Adinath Temple, sampans, fish, and snails, which are closely linked to the island’s heritage. Surrounded by lush greenery, this artistic creation has become a symbol of Moheshkhali’s tradition and natural beauty.
The sculpture, built at a cost of approximately two crore taka under the initiative of the Cox’s Bazar Development Authority, is a visual delight. It features facilities to enhance the tourist experience, including public seating, prayer areas, public restrooms, restaurants, and shopping spots, ensuring a well-rounded visit.
The realization of this project, which reflects a long-standing demand from locals, has generated immense excitement in the community. One resident expressed their pride, saying, “Betel leaves are our pride. Now, we can show it to people worldwide — this is the greatest joy.”
Moheshkhali is renowned across the country for its sweet betel leaves, and this sculpture is not just an artistic landmark but a vital medium to highlight the island’s history and traditions.
