Poet, writer, and media analyst Afroja Shoma marked her husband’s birthday in a heartwarming and unconventional way. Instead of a lavish celebration, she chose to spend the day with children from a fishermen’s village in Cox’s Bazar.

On Wednesday (October 8), Shoma visited a fishing community near Pechar Dwip along the Marine Drive, where she spent time talking, singing, and playing with local children.

“Life’s joy finds its true meaning when shared with others,” Shoma told Cox’s Bazar Life.

She also said that spending her husband, Shawkat Jahan Chowdhury’s birthday with these children brought her a rare sense of fulfillment.

“If everyone contributes within their capacity to uplift underprivileged children, we can one day build a more compassionate and equitable society,” she added.

Afroja Shoma is a poet, essayist, and assistant professor in the Media and Mass Communication Department at American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB).

Her academic and literary work focuses on gender and media studies, and she regularly writes columns and essays in national dailies.
