Tucked within the heart of Cox’s Bazar town stands the historic Agghamedha Buddhist Temple — a remarkable symbol of the Rakhine Buddhist community’s rich spiritual and cultural legacy. With roots tracing back over two and a half millennia, the temple preserves sacred relics that echo the enduring presence of Buddhism in the region. According to local accounts, the temple was originally founded around 1768 by a Buddhist monk named Aggamejui, who arrived from Myanmar (then Burma) to spread Buddhist teachings. The temple, built using grand timber imported from Burma, stands as a witness to time—its carved pillars and wooden beams tell stories of devotion and resilience.
