An agri-business service centre has been launched in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, to help marginal farmers market their produce, secure fair prices and modernise agricultural practices.
The centre will provide farmers with quality seeds, modern agricultural technologies and necessary advice and support for cultivation.
Ukhiya Upazila Nirbahi Officer Panna Akter inaugurated the service at the Tulatuli Aggregation Centre in Goyalmara, Ratnapalong union, on Tuesday.
The initiative has been implemented under the European Union-funded PRO-ACT project through a joint effort involving the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), ACI PLC, Mukti Cox’s Bazar and Tulatuli Agricultural Produce Production and Marketing Cooperative Society Limited.
Officials concerned said the centre would make improved seeds and modern agricultural inputs more accessible to local farmers. It would also provide advice on climate-resilient farming techniques, crop disease and pest management, and ways to increase production.
The initiative will also help farmers market their produce and establish direct links with larger markets. This is expected to reduce their dependence on middlemen and help them obtain fair prices for their crops.
Those involved in the initiative said the centre would play an important role in improving farmers’ skills, strengthening agricultural marketing systems and helping local communities address the risks posed by climate change.
