Dhoritri Rokkhyay Amra (DORA), a citizens’ organization working on environmental and climate issues, has distributed rice to flood-affected salt workers and unemployed fishermen in Pekua upazila, Cox’s Bazar.
The food assistance programme was held at Bamulapara in Rajakhali union at 3:00pm on Tuesday, October 13.
Recent flooding has caused financial hardship for salt workers and fishing families in several parts of Pekua. Meanwhile, the 22-day fishing ban imposed to protect mother hilsa has left many fishermen and fisheries-sector workers without work, further worsening food insecurity among low-income households.
The rice distribution was organised to provide temporary relief to families facing hardship because of the floods and loss of income.
Rice was handed over to flood-affected salt workers, unemployed fishermen, and their families.
DORA Pekua upazila coordinator Delwar Hossain, local Salt Workers’ Unity Council president Nazem Uddin, environmental activists, representatives of social organisations and local dignitaries attended the programme.
The organisers said supporting people affected by floods and unemployment was a social responsibility.
They said the initiative aimed to ease food shortages among vulnerable families during a difficult period and expressed their intention to continue helping affected and disadvantaged people within their means.
