Severe weather from a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal has badly affected St. Martin’s Island—Bangladesh’s only coral island—along with other coastal regions. Stepping in to assist, the Bangladesh Navy has launched a comprehensive relief and medical support mission for the island’s residents.

Under the direction of the Chief of Naval Staff and the overall supervision of the Commander of the Chattogram Naval Area, the Navy ship BNS Somudra Joy sailed from Chattogram carrying large quantities of emergency relief supplies to St. Martin’s. On June 1 and 2, the supplies were distributed among 1,000 affected families on the island.

In addition, another Navy ship, BNS Prottay, organized a special medical camp at the BNP Islamic School and College grounds on the island. Approximately 500 people, including children, women, and men, received free medical check-ups and essential medicines.

Specialist Navy doctors at the medical camp provided compassionate care to patients suffering from various ailments, bringing much-needed relief to the local community.

The Bangladesh Navy has a longstanding record of providing relief, medical care, and other essential support to the residents of St. Martin’s Island during natural disasters. The Navy has pledged to continue these efforts until conditions return to normal.
