A furniture businessman was shot after a group of assailants allegedly stopped his private car in Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila on Friday.
Mahmudul Haque, 45, was shot in several parts of his body and was later sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for treatment.
The incident took place around noon in the Kharulia area of the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar highway, according to police and the victim.
Haque is a resident of the Link Road area under Jhilongjha union. He currently lives with his family in the Hashemia Madrasa area of Cox’s Bazar town and runs a furniture business there and in Ramu.
Speaking to journalists, Haque said he was travelling to Ramu in his private car around noon when six men riding three motorcycles stopped his vehicle in Kharulia.
Realising that he was being attacked, he got out of the car and tried to flee, he said. The attackers then fired several shots at him, hitting him in the back, waist and other parts of his body.
After the attackers fled, local residents rescued him and took him to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital. He was later referred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated.
Jasim Uddin, Haque’s brother, alleged that his brother had a land dispute with Liaquat Ali, general secretary of the Jhilongjha union unit of the BNP.
He alleged that Liaquat’s three brothers, Zayed Ali, Kitab Ali and Wadud Ali, along with their associate Mohammad Naser, were among the six people who carried out the attack.
Cox’s Bazar Sadar police station officer-in-charge Sheikh Mohammad Ali said the matter was being investigated and necessary legal action would be taken.
