To commemorate the 250th birth anniversary of Jane Austen, one of the most enduring figures in world literature, the Department of English at Cox’s Bazar International University (CBIU) organised a discussion and cultural programme on December 19. The university auditorium hosted the event in the morning.

The programme began with a welcome address by Professor Kazi Mostain Billah, Dean of the university, who highlighted Jane Austen’s literary contributions, her unique portrayal of women, and her insightful depiction of social realities.

This was followed by student-led paper presentations that focused on Austen’s novels, character construction, and their lasting literary influence. One of the key attractions of the event was a role-play segment based on characters from Jane Austen’s novels, where students brought her literary world to life through performances.

The programme also featured a letter-reading segment, which helped participants better understand the historical context and literary atmosphere of Jane Austen’s time. Additionally, students recreated Austen-inspired characters using period costumes and styling, reflecting the era of her works.

The main objective of the event was to foster interest in world literature among students, encourage creativity, and introduce Jane Austen’s rich literary legacy to the younger generation.

The programme was attended by Associate Professor Sadat Zaman Khan, academic adviser of the English Department; Tamanna Nawreen Azam, chairperson of the department; and faculty members, students, researchers, and literature enthusiasts, who participated with great enthusiasm.
