The ongoing Bijoy Mela commemorating the Liberation War in Cox’s Bazar has been suspended following the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a July warrior and spokesperson of the Inqilab Mancha.

The Fair Celebration Committee said all programmes of the fair will remain suspended on Saturday (December 20) in observance of the state mourning declared over his death.

In a statement issued on Friday (December 19), signed by Ashraful Huda Siddiqui Jamshed, chairman of the committee; Subimal Pal Panna, convener; and Nasir Uddin, member secretary, the organisers said the death of July warrior Sharif Osman Hadi has caused profound grief. As a mark of respect and honour, they decided to suspend the fair’s activities for one day.

According to the statement, the postponed competitions will resume on Sunday (December 21) from 2:00 pm. Cultural programmes, drama performances, prize distribution, and sessions recalling the memories of the Liberation War will be held from 4:30 pm the same day.

The five-day Victory Fair was inaugurated on December 17 at Shaheed Daulat Maidan in the city.
