To combat the surge of cholera cases in Cox’s Bazar’s Ukhiya and Teknaf Rohingya camps and nearby areas, a mass oral cholera vaccination campaign has been launched.

ATM Saiful Islam, Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, inaugurated the campaign at Ukhiya Upazila Health Complex on Sunday (January 12). He highlighted the initiative’s significance, “Given the recent spike in cholera cases, the support of international donors and stakeholders has made this large-scale campaign possible. “

According to the Cox’s Bazar Civil Surgeon’s Office, the campaign targets 1,356,514 individuals, including 948,517 Rohingya refugees and 407,997 locals. The vaccination areas cover 33 Rohingya camps in Ukhiya and Teknaf, along with several nearby communities like Ukhiya’s five unions, Hoikyang and Hnila in Teknaf, Wards 4 to 9 of Khuniapalong in Ramu, Wards 1 to 3 of Ghumdhum in Bandarban’s Naikhyangchhari. 

The campaign, running until January 21, involves 1,605 teams and 3,210 volunteers delivering door-to-door vaccinations in Rohingya camps and 272 teams and 744 volunteers administering vaccines to locals at fixed locations. The daily target is 300 individuals per volunteer.
