The Fishery Ghat, fish landing centre of Cox’s Bazar, one of the country’s largest, remains lively even during the holy month of Ramadan, with fishermen and wholesale traders busy from the early hours of the morning supplying fresh fish to buyers.

A visit to the Fishery Ghat shows that fishermen and traders begin their activities at dawn, calling out to buyers as they unload fresh catches from fishing trawlers returning from the sea.

Jafar, a buyer at the landing centre, said the area becomes vibrant from early morning as trawlers arrive with freshly caught fish. Fishermen unload the catch at the ghat, after which wholesalers distribute it to markets, hotels, and individual customers.

The varieties of fish available include hilsa, rohu, katla, pangas, shrim,p and several other marine species.

Abdullah, a fisherman, said demand for fish rises during Ramadan. “Our trawlers head out to sea early in the morning, and by afternoon, we return to the Fishery Ghat with freshly caught fish. From here, the wholesalers deliver the fish to different buyers,” he said.

Wholesale traders said that while fish supply has increased, demand has also gone up during Ramadan. With many people preferring fried fish for iftar and sehri, the landing centre remains busy with buyers from morning until evening.
