Cox’s Bazar held a discussion meeting and distributed assistive devices on Thursday to mark World White Cane Safety Day, highlighting the mobility, safety, and rights of people with visual impairments.

The district administration and the district social services office organised the programme, with support from the Disability Service and Assistance Centre, at the auditorium of Arunoday School.

The event was held under the theme “Where vision is limited, possibilities are limitless”. It began with a balloon release on the school premises.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Tasnim Jahan attended the discussion as the chief guest. She said the white cane was a recognised tool that enabled people with visual impairments to participate in social activities and move around independently.

The meeting was chaired by Mohammad Shahi Newaz, deputy director of the district social services office. Speakers included Dr Murad Khan of the Civil Surgeon’s Office, Dr Mamun Hossain, consultant at the Disability Service and Assistance Centre, Engineer Kanan Pal, executive director of Exporul, and Shafiul Haque Jihadi, principal of Islamia Kamil Madrasa.

Several people with disabilities also shared their experiences. Speakers stressed the importance of education, accessible healthcare, safer pavements, stronger social protection and measures to prevent harassment.

Government officials, representatives of non-government organisations, members of civil society and people with disabilities attended the programme.

White canes and other assistive devices were distributed among nine people with visual impairments at the end of the event.
