Cox’s Bazar observed Independence and National Day with deep respect, enthusiasm, and solemnity, paying tribute to the martyrs of 1971.

At sunrise on Thursday, March 26, people began gathering at the Central Shaheed Minar in Cox’s Bazar to pay floral tributes to the fallen heroes.

On behalf of the state, the district administration placed wreaths at the Shaheed Minar at around 6:00am. This was followed by political parties, government offices, law enforcement agencies, and various social and cultural organisations, along with people from all walks of life, who paid their respects in turn.

The day saw a unique combination of festivity and solemn remembrance across the town. National flags were hoisted on important roads and at public and private institutions. Various programmes were also organised to promote the spirit of independence among the younger generation.

The day marks the historic declaration of Bangladesh’s independence. On March 26, 1971, the Bengali nation formally began its armed struggle against Pakistani rule. The Liberation War finally achieved independence and sovereignty on December 16, after nine months of war and immense sacrifice.

In Cox’s Bazar, the historic day is being marked with a series of programmes throughout the day. These include discussion meetings, cultural events and the screening of documentaries based on the Liberation War, aimed at educating the younger generation about the country’s history.

On the 56th Independence Day, people in Cox’s Bazar reaffirmed their commitment that the sacrifices of the martyrs will never be in vain, and that the nation will continue to move forward in the spirit of independence.
