Cox’s Bazar’s traditional delicacy Balachao, a shrimp-based spicy relish, has transcended local popularity to become a sought-after item in international markets.
Made with shrimp, onions, garlic, dried chilies, and aromatic spices, this long-lasting dish has gained demand across Bangladesh and among expatriates worldwide.
Traditionally enjoyed with rice, khichuri, fried rice, or salads, Balachao has evolved from a beloved local food to a “ready-to-eat” product, thanks to the entrepreneurial spirit of small business owners.
Over the past few years, nearly 90% of these entrepreneurs have been women from Cox’s Bazar, turning the dish into a viable source of income.
Balachao is widely available in supermarkets across Bangladesh and is being exported to the United States, the UK, Singapore, and Australia. Its growing demand among the Bangladeshi diaspora has boosted its international profile.
The success of Balachao stands as a testament to the potential of small entrepreneurs and traditional foods to gain global recognition.
What began as a homemade local favorite became a culinary ambassador for Cox’s Bazar, symbolizing the region’s entrepreneurial success and culinary heritage.
