A discussion meeting marking Martyred Intellectuals Day was held in Cox’s Bazar under the initiative of the district administration. The event took place on Sunday morning at the Shaheed ATM Jafar Alam Conference Hall of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, with a focus on the day’s significance.
The meeting was presided over by Deputy Commissioner Md. Abdur Mannan. In his address, he said that on the eve of the great victory of the Liberation War, the country’s guiding lights—its intellectuals—were brutally killed. Among them were progressive writers, teachers, journalists, artists, and professionals from various fields.
He emphasized that the sacrifice of the martyred intellectuals would only be truly honoured when a discrimination-free and non-communal Bangladesh is established.
Speakers at the meeting included Superintendent of Police ANM Sajedur Rahman, District Council Chief Executive Mohammad Al Maruf, Additional Deputy Commissioner Imran Hossain Sajib, former Whip Shahjahan Chowdhury, Civil Surgeon Dr. Mohammadul Haque, and Cox’s Bazar Press Club General Secretary Momtaz Uddin Bahari, alongside freedom fighters and political leaders.
Government and non-government officials, media professionals, student representatives, and other stakeholders were also present at the event.
Speakers noted that the Pakistani occupation forces and their collaborators carried out the killings in a planned manner to cripple Bangladesh and push the nation back by decades intellectually. They called on all to work together to build a safe, inclusive, and deprivation-free Bangladesh by drawing inspiration from the sacrifices and moral values of the martyred intellectuals.
