As part of the social safety net programmes under the Ministry of Social Welfare, family cards were distributed among 305 underprivileged families in Ward No 4 of Kaiyarbil union in Chakaria upazila of Cox’s Bazar under a pilot programme.

The formal inauguration of the distribution program took place on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Sugandha Hallroom of Chakaria Upazila Parishad.

Prime minister Tarique Rahman virtually inaugurated the programme from Chandpur district.

The Ministry of Social Welfare is implementing the programme under the theme, “Family, not the individual, is the core unit of development.”

The initiative aims to bring poor and low-income families under the country’s social protection framework.

In the first phase of the program, selected families are being provided with family cards, which will enable them to access various government assistance and allowance programs.

The program was chaired by Cox’s Bazar deputy commissioner, Md. A Mannan.

Reserved seat member of parliament and Cox’s Bazar district BNP general secretary Advocate Shamima Ara Swapna attended the event as special guest.

Among others present were additional superintendent of police (Crime) Ohidur Rahman, Chakaria upazila executive officer Shahin Delwar, district BNP vice-president and Chakaria BNP president Enamul Haque, district BNP vice-president Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury Khokon Mia, organisational secretary Jamil Ibrahim Chowdhury, office secretary Yusuf Badri, deputy director of the Cox’s Bazar Department of Social Services Shahi Newaz, Chakaria police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Monir Hossain, Chakaria BNP general secretary M Mobarak Ali, former professor Fakhruddin Farayezi, district Labour Party president Rafiqul Islam, Chakaria municipal BNP general secretary M Abdur Rahim and Chakaria upazila social services officer Abu Toyeb.

Earlier, on March 10, prime minister Tarique Rahman formally launched the programme at a function held at the T&T ground adjacent to Korail slum in Banani, Dhaka, where several beneficiary women were symbolically handed over family cards.
