Sonar Para in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, is one of the region’s most well-known fishing grounds. Here, fishermen employ both traditional and modern techniques to cast their nets across the sea and haul in their catch.
Most of the fishermen set out into the deep sea using small boats or trawlers. From these vessels, they deploy special types of fishing nets designed to reach the depths and draw fish to the surface.
In recent days, the Sonar Para beach has been abuzz with activity, as fishermen were seen mending nets, preparing boats, and arranging gear for their next sea journey. “We returned from the sea just a few days ago, and now we’re getting ready to go out again,” said one fisherman.
Fishing has long been a way of life here, passed down through generations. While the community continues to preserve its traditional practices, the increasing use of modern technology and mechanized trawlers has brought noticeable changes to their livelihood and the rhythm of life along the coast.
