The government has imposed a 58-day ban on all types of fishing in the Bay of Bengal and adjacent areas from April 15 to June 11.

The decision was announced at a district taskforce meeting held on Tuesday morning at the office of the Additional Deputy Commissioner in Cox’s Bazar, marking the observance of Jatka Conservation Week 2026.

The week will be observed from April 7 to April 13 under the theme “Stop catching jatka to fill rivers and seas with hilsa.”

The meeting, organised by the district administration and the district fisheries office, focused on setting an action plan for enforcing the fishing ban during the restricted period. It was chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner Imran Hossain Sajeeb.

In his remarks, he stressed the importance of raising awareness to prevent catching, trading, and storing jatka. He said monitoring would be carried out from sea to markets during the observance period.

He also noted that catching, transporting, and selling jatka during the breeding season would remain completely prohibited.

Among others, District Fisheries Officer Md Nazmul Huda, Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Sujoy Pal, and Ashish Kumar Baidya, manager of Cox’s Bazar Fish Landing Centre and wholesale market, spoke at the meeting.

Officials from the Coast Guard, Navy, Rapid Action Battalion, and leaders of fisheries cooperatives were also present.
