The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) on Sunday advised the maritime ports of Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram, Mongla and Payra to hoist Local Cautionary Signal No. 3 as deep convective cloud formations continue to develop over the northern Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas.

The warning was issued following forecasts of squally weather and gusty winds over the seaports and nearby coastal regions.

According to the BMD, the northern Bay of Bengal, adjacent coastal areas of Bangladesh and the country’s seaports may experience temporary gusty or squally winds.

As a result, the four seaports have been asked to keep Local Cautionary Signal No. 3 hoisted.

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon has officially entered Bangladesh through the Cox’s Bazar coast, marking the beginning of this year’s rainy season.

The arrival of the monsoon has already led to increased rainfall across the district and other parts of the country.

Assistant Meteorologist Md Abdul Hannan of the Cox’s Bazar Meteorological Office said that the southwest monsoon had become active over the coastal belt and was contributing to widespread rainfall.

He said that 62 millimetres of rainfall had been recorded in Cox’s Bazar during the past 24 hours.

The weather office forecast that light to moderate rainfall, accompanied at times by heavy showers, may continue across the district over the next six to seven days.

Following the issuance of the cautionary signal, authorities advised fishing boats and trawlers operating in the Bay to remain cautious and follow weather updates while at sea.
