The 2026 monsoon season has officially begun in Cox’s Bazar with the arrival of the south-west monsoon, bringing widespread rainfall to the coastal district.
A total of 59 millimetres of rainfall was recorded in the district over the past 24 hours, according to the Cox’s Bazar Meteorological Office.
Assistant Meteorologist Md Abdul Hannan confirmed on Sunday that the south-west monsoon had already entered Bangladesh through the Cox’s Bazar coast, marking the formal onset of the rainy season in the country.
He said the influence of the monsoon was increasing rainfall across coastal areas and other parts of Bangladesh, and that wet weather was likely to continue in Cox’s Bazar over the next 6 to 7 days.
According to the weather office, moderate to heavy rainfall may occur in some areas due to the seasonal wind system. Gusty winds are also likely along coastal regions.
Meteorologists believe the rainfall will have a positive impact on agriculture and the environment by replenishing water resources and easing the effects of the recent heatwave.
“The south-west monsoon has entered the country through the Cox’s Bazar coast. This signals the beginning of the monsoon season. Rainfall activity is expected to continue over the coming days,” Abdul Hannan said.
The rain has brought much-needed relief to residents after several days of intense heat and humidity.
With the arrival of the season’s first significant rainfall, the hills, forests and sea beach of Cox’s Bazar have begun to take on a greener and more vibrant appearance.
Residents said the rain had not only provided respite from the heat but had also revitalised the natural environment.
According to the latest forecast, rainfall is likely to persist throughout the coming week as the monsoon gradually strengthens across the south-eastern region of the country.
