During the peak winter season, the prices of khira, a variant of cucumber, have seen a significant decline across markets in Cox’s Bazar.
Increased production and supply of winter vegetables have ensured a steady daily arrival of fresh cucumbers, easing pressure on household budgets and bringing relief to general consumers.
A visit to several local markets in Cox’s Bazar city shows that cucumbers are currently selling at Tk 40 to Tk 45 per kilogram.
Just a few weeks ago, buyers had to pay between Tk 55 and Tk 60 for the same quantity.
The price decline has encouraged middle- and low-income families to include cucumbers more regularly in their daily shopping lists.
Traders reported that cucumbers are now being harvested directly from fields during the winter season, thereby reducing transportation expenses.
At the same time, increased cultivation by local farmers has boosted overall supply in the markets, naturally pushing prices downward.
Consumers noted that cucumbers are popular year-round due to their health benefits and frequent use in salads and other dishes during winter.
With prices now lower, many can buy larger quantities than before.
Traders remain optimistic that if weather conditions remain favourable and supply continues uninterrupted, cucumber prices will stay within an affordable range over the coming weeks.
