United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus are set to participate in a mass iftar event with over 100,000 Rohingya refugees.

According to Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, the event will occur on Friday as part of Guterres’ visit to the Rohingya camps in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar.

Per the itinerary, Guterres will arrive at the Ukhiya refugee camp around 11:30 AM on Friday. Representatives from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the World Food Programme (WFP), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and other humanitarian agencies will brief him on the overall situation in the camps.

Later, he will meet with Rohingya community leaders, youth representatives, and women’s groups. In the afternoon, Guterres will meet with religious leaders at the Kutupalong refugee camp. The visit will conclude with a mass Iftar event alongside the refugees.

Cox’s Bazar District Police spokesperson, Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Jasim Uddin Chowdhury, stated that the Special Security Force (SSF) oversees security arrangements, with a multi-layered security system in place for the visit.

“The military is supervising security in the camps, while law enforcement agencies are ensuring strict security measures from Cox’s Bazar Airport to the refugee camps,” Jasim Uddin said.
