On this International Workers’ Day, Cox’s Bazar pays tribute to 75-year-old Sandhya Dash, a woman whose relentless labour turned the wheels of fortune for her family.

Nearly four decades ago, when her husband Mridul Dash lost his ability to work due to illness, Sandhya found herself in a desperate situation. She had little idea how to survive with four daughters and two sons to feed.

With a small amount of capital, she began purchasing fresh vegetables wholesale from Boro Bazar and selling them at retail prices in different town centers. Carrying her children on one side and her hopes on the other, Sandhya launched into an unending battle against hardship.

Her determination bore fruit. One by one, she educated and married off her four daughters. Her children are now literate and standing on their own feet. And even today, she continues her humble vegetable business—not alone, but with her husband, who now helps her as much as he can.
