Information and Broadcasting Secretary Mahbuba Farzana on Saturday called on people to unite in rebuilding the country while upholding the spirit of the July uprising.

She said young people shed their blood during the July movement, and their sacrifice can never be repaid.

Everyone must fulfill their responsibilities to build a discrimination-free, just, and prosperous country that meets their expectations, she added, stressing that journalists play an important role.

She made the remarks during a discussion with journalists at Hilltop Circuit House in Cox’s Bazar.

Farzana said the government had already taken several decisions to support journalists and was undertaking initiatives to improve their working environment and welfare.

She also said the government would soon build a dedicated information complex for journalists in Cox’s Bazar. The facility would help local journalists carry out their professional activities and improve access to information, she added.

The secretary said measures, including amendments to cyber laws, were underway to curb the nationwide spread of misinformation and false information.

She stressed the need for effective initiatives to prevent the misuse of information technology and ensure accurate information flows.

Journalists must act responsibly by verifying information, reporting objectively and highlighting issues of public interest, she said, adding that such efforts could play an important role in raising public awareness.

District Information Officer Abdus Sattar, Cox’s Bazar Press Club president Mahbubur Rahman, general secretary Momtaz Uddin Bahari, journalists Shamsul Haque Sharek, Ikram Chowdhury Tipu, advocate Abu Siddik Osmani and Murshedur Rahman Khokon attended the meeting.

Also present were Journalist Union Cox’s Bazar general secretary SM Zafar, MR Mahbub, Moazzem Hossain Shakil, Sumon, and other journalist leaders.
