The district-level two-day Inter-college Sports Competition 2026, organised by the National University, began in a festive atmosphere at the Cox’s Bazar Government College ground on Saturday.

The competition was formally inaugurated at noon through a colourful ceremony. The programme began with the hoisting of the national, college, and sports flags, followed by the release of pigeons as a symbol of peace by the invited guests.

On the opening day, various track events and an exciting cricket match took place. The competition involves students from various colleges affiliated with the National University in Cox’s Bazar district.

Professor Abul Hasnat Md Mofizul Haque, the principal of Cox’s Bazar Government College, chaired the inauguration ceremony. The vice-chancellor of the National University, Professor Dr ASM Amanullah, attended the event as the chief guest.

Addressing the audience, the vice-chancellor said that students should not be confined to textbooks alone, as physical and mental development requires active engagement in sports and cultural activities. He added that the National University is organising such competitions at the district level to nurture future national-level athletes from grassroots institutions.

Among others present at the event were National University pro vice-chancellor Professor Md Nurul Islam, treasurer Dr ATM Zafrul Azam, vice-principal of Cox’s Bazar Government College Professor Md Ohidul Islam, and teachers’ council secretary Muhammad Ullah. Associate professor of the mathematics department and convener of the sports competition organising committee, Ahmad Kabir, was also present.

The programme was conducted by an associate professor of the chemistry department, Dr Ajay Kumar Dutta. The two-day sports meet will conclude on Sunday with a closing ceremony and prize distribution.
