Cox’s Bazar marked International Day of the Midwife with a vibrant fair and discussion session held at the Office of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) on Saturday. The event was jointly organized by UNFPA, the Cox’s Bazar Health Department, and the Cox’s Bazar Working Group.

The fair featured several stalls highlighting the critical roles of skilled midwives, safe pregnancy and newborn care, delivery services, and maternal health awareness. Visitors were informed about the importance of professional midwifery in improving maternal and neonatal outcomes, especially in vulnerable communities.

The discussion session, held later in the day, featured Additional Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Mohammad Shamsud Douza as the chief guest. Deputy Director of the Family Planning Office Biplob Barua chaired the event, which was attended by Dr. Shah Fahim Ahmad Faisal, Medical Officer from the Civil Surgeon’s Office, and other stakeholders.

Speakers emphasized the vital role of trained midwives in reducing maternal and child mortality, especially in humanitarian settings like Cox’s Bazar. They called for enhanced support, recognition, and integration of midwifery services in the national healthcare system.
