Behind every clean room, neatly made bed, and comfortable stay at a hotel or resort, housekeeping workers work quietly to ensure guests feel at ease.
As International Housekeeping Week is being observed from September 13 to 19, their often-overlooked contribution to the tourism and hospitality industry is receiving renewed attention.
The week has been observed since 1981 to recognise housekeeping workers, traditionally during the second full week of September.
In Cox’s Bazar, one of Bangladesh’s major tourist destinations, hotels and resorts are giving special attention to their housekeeping teams during the week.
At the eco-friendly Mermaid Beach Resort in Cox’s Bazar, housekeeping workers were seen busy attending to guests and preparing rooms.
Their daily responsibilities range from cleaning and arranging rooms and making beds to ensuring that necessary amenities are properly placed. They also work to maintain a clean and comfortable environment throughout the resort.
While tourists enjoy the resort’s natural beauty and facilities, housekeeping workers remain behind the scenes, maintaining the environment that makes their stay comfortable.
Mermaid Beach Resort management said its housekeeping department receives special attention as part of efforts to ensure quality services for guests.
“Housekeeping staff work with sincerity and responsibility to ensure guests’ comfort and satisfaction,” the management said.
Rokon Ahmed, member secretary of the Cox’s Bazar Hotel Employees’ Union, said workers receive guidance and training on different aspects of hotel and resort services to improve their skills.
“Alongside the growth of the tourism industry, developing workers’ skills and professionalism is important for ensuring quality services for tourists,” he said.
For tourists staying in Cox’s Bazar, a clean and well-maintained room may appear routine. Yet behind that comfort is the daily work of housekeeping staff, who prepare rooms, maintain cleanliness and respond to guests’ needs.
The workers say tourists’ satisfaction and comfort motivate them most.
Resort authorities, meanwhile, believe housekeeping staff play an essential role in maintaining quality hospitality services.
International Housekeeping Week is therefore more than a celebration. It is also an opportunity to recognise and appreciate the quiet workers whose daily efforts help make stays in Cox’s Bazar more comfortable for tourists from home and abroad.
