International Women’s Day was observed in Cox’s Bazar on Sunday with the theme “Today’s actions for tomorrow’s justice: ensure the rights of women and girls.”

Marking the occasion, the district administration organised a discussion meeting in the morning in association with the Department of Women’s Affairs and the National Women’s Organisation.

The discussion was held at the conference hall of Arunoday School, where Cox’s Bazar deputy commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mannan attended as the chief guest.

In his address, the deputy commissioner said that since the beginning of human civilisation, men and women have had to work together to build and move the world forward, and that cooperation would remain essential as long as the world exists.

He also noted that women are one of the main pillars in holding families together in society, stressing that everyone must come forward to ensure the protection and dignity of women.

The meeting was chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner Imran Hossain Sazib. Among others who spoke were additional superintendent of police Debdut Majumder, deputy director of the Department of Women Affairs Subrata Biswas, additional deputy commissioner Tasnim Jahan, Cox’s Bazar district BNP general secretary Shamima Ara Swapna, upazila nirbahi officer Tanzila Tasnim, and Cox’s Bazar Women Chamber of Commerce president Jahanara Islam.

Officials from various government and non-government organisations, women entrepreneurs, and leaders of women’s organisations were also present.

Speakers at the event emphasised the need for collective efforts to ensure women’s empowerment and the protection of their rights. They also called for an end to violence against women and urged society to move forward by including women in all aspects of development.
