A jetty will be constructed at Sabrang Tourism Park in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, enabling tourists to travel directly to Saint Martin’s Island. Another jetty will also be built centrally at the National Special Economic Zone (NSEZ) in Mirsarai, Chattogram, primarily for use by investing companies.

The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) will construct both jetties. In addition to construction, the agency will also be responsible for related infrastructure development and operational management.

To this end, BIWTA has signed an agreement with the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA). The signing ceremony took place at the BEZA office in Agargaon, Dhaka, according to a press release.

On behalf of BEZA, Executive Board Secretary and Joint Secretary Julia Moin signed the agreement, while Director (Administration and Human Resources) Saiful Islam signed on behalf of BIWTA.

Officials, including BEZA Executive Members, Major General (Retd.) Nazrul Islam, Saleh Ahmed, and Mostafa Kamal, were present at the event. Nazrul Islam, Saleh Ahmed, and Mostafa Kamal were present at the event. BIWTA Chairman Rear Admiral Arif Ahmed Mostafa, along with other senior officials, also attended.

According to BEZA, land has already been identified for the projects—6.18 acres in the NSEZ area and 5 acres at Sabrang Tourism Park. BEZA and BIWTA will share the net profit from the jetties in a 45:55 ratio.

Presiding over the event, BEZA Executive Member Major General (Retd.) Nazrul Islam described the agreement as a milestone, noting that the jetty would play a vital role in transforming the economic zone into a self-sustaining industrial hub while facilitating investment.

Another BEZA Executive Member, Saleh Ahmed, said that despite various challenges, Sabrang Tourism Park holds immense potential for tourism development. The planned jetty is expected to unlock further opportunities for building attractive tourism facilities in the area.

BIWTA Chairman Rear Admiral Arif Ahmed Mostafa said that the authority aims to successfully implement the project by utilizing its experience in managing inland water transport systems.
