Cox’s Bazar, known for its natural beauty, is not only famous for its sea beach and hills but also for its diverse local fruits. Among them, the sour hill fruit “Belombu” is drawing increasing attention.
While it has long been familiar to locals, it is now becoming equally popular among tourists.
This fruit is mostly found along Marine Drive and in Pechardwip. Locally grown, Belombu is small to medium in size and has a distinctly sour taste, offering a unique flavor experience for food lovers.
Local youth Jamal said that Belombu is commonly used to make pickles and chutneys.
It is also enjoyed raw with a bit of salt, making it a popular snack, especially during afternoon breaks or while traveling.
Demand for Belombu is also rising among tourists. Many visitors exploring Marine Drive are seen buying the fruit from roadside stalls. Some even take it home as a gift for loved ones.
Local vendor Hamid said that sales of Belombu are excellent during the season, providing an additional source of income.
However, as the fruit is not yet cultivated on a large commercial scale, its supply remains limited.
This naturally grown hill fruit is gradually gaining recognition across the country as a unique part of Cox’s Bazar’s local culture and food diversity.
With proper care and commercial initiatives, it could play an important economic role in the future.
