A joy procession and thanks-giving gathering were held in Pekua to express gratitude to Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed following the declaration of Pekua as a municipality.
The procession, organized under the banner of the Upazila Citizens’ Committee, began on Sunday afternoon at the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Coastal College grounds. It later paraded through the College Gate intersection before concluding at the WAPDA square on the western side of Pekua Bazar.
People from various political parties, professional groups, and business communities, as well as men and women from all walks of life, participated in the procession, carrying banners and festoons.
Journalist Safwanul Karim, president of the Pekua Press Club, led the procession.
Speaking at the gathering held afterward at WAPDA Square, he said the declaration of Pekua as a municipality had long been a cherished demand among local residents.
“This announcement has opened a new horizon for the development of Pekua, the expansion of civic facilities, and the establishment of a modern urban management system,” he said, expressing gratitude to Salahuddin Ahmed for the initiative.
He also said the declaration would play an important role in fulfilling the aspirations, unity, and development dreams of the people of Pekua.
“To build a modern, clean and planned municipality in the future, everyone must work together collectively,” he added.
Local dignitaries, journalists, political leaders, and people from different professions attended the gathering.
