A low-pressure system over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Andaman Sea has intensified into a depression as it moved west-northwestward.

As a result, the Meteorological Department has hoisted remote cautionary signal number 1 for the four maritime ports – Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra

As of 6 AM today, the depression was located 785 km south-southwest of Chattogram seaport, 700 km south-southwest of Cox’s Bazar seaport, 820 km south-southeast of Mongla seaport, and 760 km south-southeast of Payra seaport. The depression is likely to continue moving west-northwestward and may intensify into a cyclonic storm.

This information was provided by the Meteorological Department in a special weather bulletin issued at noon on Tuesday, October 22.

According to the bulletin, the maximum sustained wind speed near the depression’s center is 40 km/h, rising to 50 km/h in gusts or squalls. The sea near the depression’s center is rough.

All fishing boats and trawlers in the north Bay of Bengal and deep sea have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.
