The Mahanagar Express, which currently operates on the Dhaka–Chattogram route, will be extended to Cox’s Bazar from October 26, although its stop at Kumira station will be cancelled.
Mohammad Shafiqul Rahman, chief operating superintendent (COPS) of Bangladesh Railway’s eastern zone, said the route extension was part of a plan to increase train services on the Dohazari–Cox’s Bazar railway line. He added that necessary arrangements had been made to introduce the service from October 26.
According to the revised schedule, train No. 721 will leave Cox’s Bazar at 8:00am and arrive in Chattogram at 12:20pm. It will then depart Chattogram at 12:30pm and reach Dhaka at 6:30pm.
In the opposite direction, train No. 722 will leave Dhaka at 8:30pm and arrive in Chattogram at 2:40am. It will depart Chattogram at 3:00am and reach Cox’s Bazar at 6:00am.
The train offers Shovon Chair, Snigdha, AC seat, and AC berth classes.
Passengers from Feni, Cumilla, Brahmanbaria and Narsingdi, as well as Nangalcoat, Laksam, Kasba, Akhaura, Ashuganj and Bhairab Bazar stations, will be able to travel directly to Cox’s Bazar.
However, railway staff have expressed concerns that the single-track section between Chattogram and Dohazari, along with short loop lines at several stations, could complicate train crossings. This could also disrupt other trains’ schedules.
With the cancellation of the stop at Kumira, passengers from the area will have to use alternative train services or other modes of transport.
